Why encode text as Base64
Base64 turns arbitrary bytes into a 64-character ASCII alphabet that travels safely through systems built for text — JSON fields, HTTP headers, URL parameters, email bodies, and config files that choke on control characters or non-printable bytes. Encoding plain text as Base64 sounds redundant, but it's a common requirement when a downstream system wants opaque strings (auth tokens, signed state, CSRF nonces) or when you need to embed snippets without worrying about escaping.
Need to go the other way? Use our Base64 to Text tool to decode any Base64 string back to the original UTF-8 text.
Where you'll use the output
- JWT-style payloads — most JSON Web Tokens encode their header and payload as URL-safe Base64; flip the toggle on and paste straight into your token builder.
- Basic Auth headers — the
Authorization: Basic ...scheme is justbase64("user:pass"). - Data URIs — wrap the output as
data:text/plain;base64,...for an inline-embeddable string. - CI/CD config — many pipelines accept multi-line secrets only as a single Base64 line.
